Captain’s License Part 6
From now on we are going to getting into the most important RULES if you plan to sail a boat.
Here is what the RULES say regarding when TWO sailing vessels meet and must maneuver to avoid COLLISION:
*When each has the wind on a DIFFERENT side, the vessel that has the wind on the PORT (LEFT) side shall yield to the other vessel.
*When BOTH have the wind on the SAME side, the vessel that is to the WINDWARD, which is the direction UPWIND from the point of reference, shall yield to the other vessel.
*If a vessel with the wind on the PORT side sees a vessel to WINDWARD and can’t determine with CERTAINTY whether the other vessel has the wind on the PORT or on the STARBOARD (RIGHT) side, then it shall yield to the other vessel.
By the way, the RULES have determined WINDWARD to be as follows:
It shall be deemed to be the side OPPOSITE to that on which the MAINSAIL is carried.
It helps to draw on a piece of paper what has been discussed and watch YouTube training videos.
