Captain’s License Part 47
Today we begin a series on SOUND and LIGHT SIGNALS.
First we look at some definitions:
WHISTLE refers any sound signaling item capable of producing the required BLASTS.
SHORT TERM BLAST = 1 second duration.
PROLONGED BLAST= 4-6 seconds duration.
If the vessel is 12 meters up to 20 meters in length, then it must be equipped with a WHISTLE.
If the vessel is 20 meters up to 100 meters in length, then it must be equipped with a BELL and a WHISTLE.
If the vessel is over 100 meters in length, then it must be equipped with a GONG, whose sound can’t be confused with a BELL.
The BELL and GONG can be replaced with other devices as long as they make the same sounds.
Finally if the vessel is LESS than 12 meters, it doesn’t need the above sounding devices so long as it does have any device capable of making an efficient sound signal.
